I'm am slowly but surely figuring out this perl stuff. I tell you though, it's the worst trying to debug a language you've hardly used + not knowing what the heck is wrong since I don't have a compiler of my own, I just have to rely on those "Internal Server Error" messages to tell me when something has gone wrong. Not much help. Man, it took the longest time finding out that when comparing strings, I have to use things like eq, not == as it is for numbers, this gave me the most frickin' grief, took about an hour tweaking crap, and reading a little manual thing on the internet over and over agian until I realized that the thing that showed comparison operators used the text operators for variables that happened to contain strings and the numerical operators for those that held numbers. Heck, I thought it was trying to tell me either would work interchangeably, you know, as an added convenience or something. If that ain't subtle teaching, I don't know what is.
I just realized this, now that I've started adding the time here, it ends up to be about ten minutes after the time there before I get done figuring out all I want to put down here, but that'll all change after I implement my cgi posting. I might even put in one of those chatter-box things that people put on the side of their site so that all their friends can say hi each time they visit, and tell me how cool my site is.
Wow, this has ended up to be quite long, but I'm gonna have to write my paper tomorrow, hopefully, so I can just get it out of the way. I bet I can finish a nice draft after a few hours of reading through my sources and vigorously taking notes.
But if I wanna get all the done, I better get some sleep, or I'm not going to feel like doing anything tomorrow.
One last plea for help, if you know how to take all the enters, ie
's out of a string and replace them with, say, >br< with transversed carets, let me know cuz I couldn't get some operation on the default variable to work, i did something like s/
/d;, I was trying to delete them at the time
Well, have fun, and remember, Halloween just isn't the same without Thanksgiving three weeks later.

Hey, hey, guess what? I finally scanned in all the stuff for my
Senior Memory Book so if you feel the desire to read, click the link, or you can go to the Writings section that you see over there under Quick Links and read it and many of the other things I've written.
Happy Thanksgiving, I still gotta write my ten page paper for english, but when it is finished, it'll be here for all to enjoy, or detest, or to sit and rot with no one viewing it.

I guess nobody wants to help me learn cgi, but, to my surprise, I found a very informative writing on how to write perl, which can be used in cgi, and I found out that in order for it to work, it has to be saved in a unix format text, so maybe my java versions will work if i get rid of all those ^M's at the end of each line or I suppose I could just use perl since it doesn't seem so difficult.
I have to work the Purdue/IU game today, sounds like so much fun doesn't it? Well I thought so. Hopefully Purdue wins and they can get into a bowl game so, you know, I can watch it on TV or something.
20 min later Well, I guess removing all the ^M's from my java file didn't work. I really would appreciate some guidance from someone who knows.

Hey, I've noticed a rash of people visiting since I posted on the CS newsgroup, so if any of you CSers out there know how to to do CGI crap drop me a line at my e-mail address over there -->
According to the purdue webpage somewhere I saw that it supports it and I read someplace that all it is, is like a program that what it outputs gets sent to the browser. If I could do this I could make this news script work so that you only have to download the 5 latest psuedo-posts instead of the whole array of them -- good for those w/dial-up like myself, not that I visit my page that often online anyway, but still. . .
Evening that later Um... I've decided I need to add more fun stuff since this site is pretty boring, so, um, I guess that means I need to add stuff that is fun, but since I'm no good at that sort of thing, after I figure cgi out, that means I can put a message board up, and other people can have fun, you know, like post all that stuff that you're not supposed to on the CS newsgroup or something like that.
DisclaimerYou do realize that it's not that late but I am tired and what I am saying may not make complete sense, but I'm sure that cool stuff can be done with cgi. I could just find someone elses script and use that, but then what's the fun in that? you know, if I can't call it my own?

Just a quick note: I got pCDDB working. You have to register the cddbcontrol.ocx, so I added a .bat file that should do this for you. Just be sure it's in the directory with the .ocx and the program when run.
Later that day. . . I've decided to make this the main page because the other one sucked. If you want to see the old one, click
here. I also added more stuff I've written--the journals for the first half of the semester in
English 103C.
have fun.

I figured out how to print. I am currently in the process of changing all of my projects over to .NET, so when I get around to posting them here, I'll keep the VB6 versions too, but the newer ones are likely to be better since some of these were made before I formally began learning VB and have some round about ways of doing things. I also have a couple programs that I made for family members long ago, that will be updated and most likly added here.
They are:
Customer Data - very similar to debtor data but for customers.
Personal Library - a database to store a list of all the books you own.
Inventory - used for keeping track of how many items you own (for a small business or whatnot)
Since I can't get pCDDB to work in .NET, I may remove it (or probably try to see if I can rewrite the control that lets me talk to the CDDB servers.

Just so you know, Personal CDDB will probably not work for you. (at least it doesn't work for me right now). I wrote it a while ago in Visual Basic 6 and am now slowly in the process of converting my programs to VB .net, which is a pain. (I still haven't figured out how to print yet.) I'm not sure how I got pCDDB to work before, but it once did work I assure you this.
